Music… more than a pretty sound…

We’ve all heard that music is a universal language.  It’s also true for an ESL class.  Music is a effective way to break the ice and get children engaged.  I began by teaching them a Good Morning song which is simple, repetitious and easy to learn.

Then I continued by reading to them a chant, Brown bear, Brown Bear. What Do You See?, a great way to introduce animals and colours.  After some practice,  I had them chanting with me!

Later we moved on to the Sing Me a Rainbow song and focused more on colours.

With the addition of simple colours of the rainbow strips for each group, they sang and waved their strips when it was their turn.  It took a little while for them to get the gist of it, but they loved it as it was a totally new experience of music, language and movement.
